Pet dog attacks woman in Shilaj society; CCTV footage goes viral

Ahmedabad: In yet another incident of a pet dog attack in the city, a woman was injured after being attacked by a pet Labrador at Kaveri Sangam Apartments near the Shilaj crossroads on the SP Ring Road.

The incident occurred on January 20 and has sparked renewed discussion about the safety of residents living in housing societies that allow pet dogs. According to CCTV footage of the incident, which has now gone viral, the woman was climbing the staircase of the residential building when a young woman residing on an upper floor was descending the stairs with her pet dog on a leash. Although the victim tried to step back to avoid the animal, it managed to injure her leg before being pulled away by its owner.

The injured woman, Hinaben Patel, is a retired government school principal from Akrund village near Dhansura in Aravalli district. She had come to Ahmedabad with her husband, Jashwantbhai Patel, to visit their daughter, who resides in a flat at Kaveri Sangam Apartments.

Following the incident, Hinaben Patel returned to her village, where she received treatment at a primary health centre in Akrund. Doctors advised her to take four anti-rabies injections.

Her husband stated that when the couple confronted the dog owner, they were allegedly told, “The dog is like my child; do whatever you want,” after which the family decided to lodge a formal complaint.

A complaint has been submitted via email to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s CNCD department and the Bopal Police Station. Local residents have reportedly informed the family that multiple complaints had previously been raised against the same pet dog.

Reacting to the complaint, a site inspection was carried out by the Dog Complaint Cell (Veterinary Doctor / Sub-Inspector / Catcher) functioning under the CNCD department of AMC. During the inspection, it was found that the pet dog had been vaccinated. It was also revealed that the pet dog was registered on May 26, 2025, by Mr. Shivam Bharatkumar Suthar.

The CNCD department’s veterinary doctor, sanitary inspector, and police staff submitted an online application at the Bopal Police Station seeking legal action against the pet dog owner for negligence, including allowing the dog to roam in a manner that could cause harm to others, incidents of injury caused to others, harassment caused by the pet dog, and failure to take adequate precautions in cases of dog attacks.

The AMC also stated that the white Labrador involved in the incident has been seized from the owner and placed in the Municipal Corporation’s dog shelter to prevent any further harm. Police have initiated further necessary legal proceedings against the pet dog owner in the matter. DeshGujarat
