Trial for barrier-free toll collection likely to start at Choryasi toll plaza from Feb 2
January 28, 2026
Surat: The country’s first multi-lane, barrier-free toll collection system is expected to become operational at the Choryasi toll plaza in Kamrej within the next 15 days, replacing the existing toll mechanism. According to reports, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will begin testing the new facility from February 2.
With the introduction of this advanced tolling system, motorists will no longer be required to stop or wait in long queues to pay toll charges. The Central Government is rolling out multi-lane free-flow digital toll plazas across the country, and Kamrej has been chosen as the first site for this pilot project.
Under the new system, traditional toll booths and manual toll collection will be completely phased out. Vehicles will be able to pass through the toll stretch without slowing down, helping reduce congestion and improve traffic movement on the national highway.
Toll charges will be deducted automatically using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology. High-resolution cameras will scan vehicle number plates, and the FASTag-linked amount will be debited directly, making the process fully contactless and free of human intervention.
It is learnt that a team of over 25 experts from Taiwan’s FETC agency has been working on the final stages of implementing the technology since September. Preparations are underway to make the system fully operational within the next two weeks. DeshGujarat
