Ahmedabad: The Amdavad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has witnessed positive results in the first month of the year under the Interest Waiver Scheme 2025–26, aimed at boosting property tax collection. Under the scheme, an estimated net income of Rs 128.05 crore was generated across all seven zones of the city between January 1 and January 31, 2026. During this period, the North West Zone and the West Zone registered the highest tax collection performance.

Chairman of the Revenue Committee, Aniruddhasinh Jhala, said that zone-wise figures show the North West Zone recorded the highest net income of Rs 28.38 crore, followed by the West Zone with Rs 22.36 crore and the South West Zone with Rs 17.77 crore. The Central Zone collected Rs 18.49 crore, the Eastern Zone Rs 16.37 crore, the Southern Zone Rs 13.47 crore, and the Northern Zone Rs 11.20 crore. He said the response from taxpayers to the scheme has been unprecedented and encouraging.

According to AMC, around 99,904 taxpayers availed benefits of the scheme during the period. The total gross collection stood at Rs 143.19 crore, out of which Rs 15.14 crore was provided as an interest waiver, resulting in a net income of Rs 128.05 crore. Officials noted that the figures indicate a significant rise in tax recovery despite the waiver.

Jhala further said that AMC has announced a 100 percent interest waiver from January to March 2026 for both residential and non-residential (commercial) properties under the old tax formula. Under the new tax formula, residential properties received an 85 percent waiver in January, which will reduce to 80 percent in February and 75 percent in March, with the benefit decreasing by 5 percent each month to encourage early payments. For non-residential properties under the new formula, the waiver was 65 percent in January, which will reduce to 60 percent in February and 50 percent in March. Additionally, all residential properties with shacks and huts will receive a 100 percent interest waiver from January 1 to March 31, 2026.

However, AMC clarified that the incentive rebate scheme will not apply to the current year’s property tax for 2025–26. The scheme is expected to enhance the recovery of outstanding dues while providing financial relief to taxpayers through interest concessions.

Meanwhile, tax recovery data shows that a total collection of Rs 1,493.62 crore has been recorded in 2025–26 from April 1, 2025, to January 31, 2026, compared to Rs 1,339.88 crore collected during the same period last year. This reflects an increase of Rs 153.74 crore, or approximately 11.5 percent growth in revenue.

AMC also reported an approximate collection of Rs 217.15 crore in professional tax and Rs 197.93 crore in vehicle tax during 2025–26 so far.

Overall, officials said the interest waiver and incentive measures have delivered progressive and satisfactory results in tax collection, strengthening the possibility of achieving the annual revenue target by the end of the financial year. DeshGujarat
