Budget 2026 allocates ₹17,366 crore for railway infrastructure in Gujarat

Gandhinagar: Gujarat has received a record ₹17,366 crore allocation in the Railway Budget 2026–27, which is nearly 29 times higher than the average allocation during the Congress-led UPA period, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Monday.

According to the railway ministry, during the period 2009 to 2014, Gujarat’s average annual railway budget stood at ₹589 crore. In contrast, the allocation for 2026–27 has surged to ₹17,366 crore, reflecting a nearly 29-fold increase.

The Railway Minister said that railway projects worth ₹1,28,748 crore are currently underway across Gujarat. These projects include the construction of new railway lines, large-scale station redevelopment, and major safety upgrades.

Under the Amrit Station Scheme, 87 railway stations in Gujarat are being redeveloped at a cost of ₹6,058 crore. Of these, 19 stations have already been completed in a modernised form, significantly improving passenger amenities and station aesthetics.

Since 2014, around 2,900 kilometres of new railway lines have been added in the state, while 4,005 kilometres of tracks have been electrified. With this progress, Gujarat has emerged as a 100 percent electrified railway state.

At present, Gujarat operates five pairs of Vande Bharat trains, one pair of Amrit Bharat trains, and one pair of Namo Bharat trains, offering passengers faster, safer, and more comfortable travel options.

In addition, 1,177 level crossings have been eliminated and replaced with flyovers and underpasses, significantly improving both rail and road safety as well as traffic movement.

The indigenous Kavach train protection system has been implemented over 96 route kilometres, while work or tendering is underway for another 1,674 route kilometres, marking a major technological advancement in railway safety.

With record investment, modernised infrastructure, high-speed trains, and advanced safety systems, Indian Railways continues to play a key role in accelerating Gujarat’s overall development. DeshGujarat
