Railways to speed up 2,100-km Dankuni-Surat freight corridor; DPR to be revised

New Delhi: The Railway Board has stepped up efforts to advance the newly announced 2,100-km Dankuni–Surat Dedicated Freight Corridor, a key rail infrastructure project highlighted in the Union Budget 2026.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has instructed officials to fast-track execution of the corridor, which is intended to boost east-west freight movement and ease congestion on the existing railway network. Stretching from West Bengal to Gujarat, the route will pass through Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra, and is expected to significantly improve freight efficiency while reducing transit time for goods trains.
Officials of the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) have been directed to finalise technology standards based on the latest advancements in freight logistics. Features under consideration include high-capacity electrification, elimination of level crossings, and deployment of signalling systems such as Kavach.
The detailed project report (DPR) will be revised to reflect updated costs and planning requirements, enabling improved budgeting and simultaneous execution of multiple sections. To accelerate progress, the project will be divided into smaller segments with dedicated core teams assigned for close monitoring. Preparatory work, including contract documentation, is also being advanced to prevent delays once construction begins.
A study is underway to determine optimal manpower needs for the corridor. The Railway Board will conduct weekly reviews to track progress, assess milestones, and ensure timely support for smooth implementation. DeshGujarat
