Gujarat govt notifies 33-point questionnaire for Census 2027 houselisting exercise
February 23, 2026
Gandhinagar: The Gujarat Government has republished a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) outlining the scope of questions to be asked during the upcoming Census of India 2027.
The notification, published in the Extraordinary issue of the Gujarat Government Gazette (Extra No. 19, Part IV-A) on Thursday, pertains to instructions issued by the Office of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India, under Section 8(1) of the Census Act, 1948.
Originally notified by the MHA on January 22, 2026, the order supersedes an earlier notification dated January 7, 2020, except in respect of actions already taken under the previous notification.
As per the directive, all Census Officers, within their respective jurisdictions, are authorised to collect information through the houselisting and housing census schedule in connection with Census 2027.
The notification specifies 33 items on which information will be sought. These include details related to buildings and census houses such as municipal or local authority building numbers, census house numbers, and the predominant materials used for floors, walls and roofs.
Officials will also gather data on the use and condition of census houses, household numbers, total number of residents, name and sex of the head of the household, and whether the head belongs to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe or other categories.
Further, the exercise will capture ownership status of the house, number of dwelling rooms, number of married couples in the household, and access to basic amenities such as drinking water, electricity, latrine facilities, waste water outlets, bathing facilities and kitchen with LPG or PNG connection.
Information on the main fuel used for cooking and availability of household assets — including radio or transistor, television, internet access, laptop or computer, telephone/mobile phone/smartphone, bicycle, scooter, motorcycle, moped, car, jeep or van — will also be collected.
The schedule additionally includes details on the main cereal consumed by the household and a mobile number, which will be used strictly for census-related communications.
The notification was signed by Mritunjay Kumar Narayan, Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India. It was republished by the General Administration Department, Sachivalaya, Gandhinagar, by order and in the name of the Governor of Gujarat. Maya M. Dabhi, Deputy Secretary to Government, issued the state-level publication.
The houselisting and housing census exercise forms a key preparatory stage for the nationwide Census of India 2027. DeshGujarat
