IAS Mukesh Kumar Appointed AMC Administrator as Elected Body’s Term Ends

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat government has appointed an Administrator for the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) as the term of the existing elected body will end on March 9, 2026. This is because the civic elections could not be completed before the expiry of the corporation’s duration, the government notification said.
According to an official government notification, the current AMC councillors, who were elected in the February 2021 general elections, will complete their term on March 9, 2026, as per the provisions of the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporations Act, 1949.
The notification states that under Section 6B of the Act, elections to constitute a new municipal corporation must be completed before the expiry of the existing body’s term. However, the State Election Commission, Gujarat, could not complete the election process within the stipulated time due to unforeseen circumstances.
In view of the situation, the state government has exercised powers under Section 7A(1)(ii) of the Act and appointed Mukesh Kumar, IAS, Additional Chief Secretary to the Government, Education Department (Higher and Technical Education), Sachivalaya, Gandhinagar, as the Administrator of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.
As per the order, the Administrator will take charge from March 10, 2026, and will continue to manage the affairs of the civic body until a new set of councillors is elected in the next municipal election. DeshGujarat
