24 More Toll Plazas in Gujarat to Become Barrier-Free Under MLFF System

Kushagra Tiwari, Surat: Choryasi toll plaza in Kamrej on the Ahmedabad–Mumbai National Highway (NH-48) became the first barrier-less toll plaza in the country earlier this year. Now, in a step forward to make more toll plazas barrier-free, the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), a company promoted by NHAI, has started the process to implement the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll collection system across 24 more toll plazas in Gujarat.

The MLFF system aims to eliminate the need for traditional toll booths and barriers, allowing vehicles to pass through at highway speeds while toll fees are deducted automatically.

As per three separate Requests for Proposals issued by IHMCL, the company intends to engage “Acquirer Banks” to manage the technical infrastructure and financial processing for these plazas. Once a contract is signed, the successful bidders will have six months to implement the solution and make it operational. The engagement will be for a five-year period after implementation.

The technology behind stop-free highway travel

Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling is a barrier-less tolling system that moves away from the stop-and-go method of traditional toll collection. Instead, overhead gantries equipped with FASTag readers and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras identify vehicles as they pass.

Key features of the project include:

• High-speed detection: The system can accurately read number plates and FASTags even for vehicles traveling at high speeds.

• Real-time monitoring: A dedicated web portal will provide real-time updates on traffic counts and system health.

• Violation management: For vehicles without valid tags, an “e-Notice” module will automatically generate payment notices based on the vehicle’s registration number.

This move is expected to significantly reduce congestion at toll points, improve fuel efficiency for motorists, and provide a more seamless travel experience across Gujarat’s national highway network. DeshGujarat
