Mundra: The Union government has directed Tata Power’s 4-gigawatt imported-coal power plant in Gujarat to operate at full capacity from April 1 to June 30 to meet the expected surge in electricity demand during the summer, a Reuters report said.

As per the news agency, the order said that generation from imported coal-based plants needs to be increased to ensure adequate power supply across the country. It also noted that similar directions could be issued to other imported-coal plants between April and June if required.

The move comes as the country expects record peak power demand of around 270 gigawatts in the coming months, compared to about 242 GW in 2025-26.

The directive comes days after the Gujarat government’s approval of a revised power purchase agreement with Tata Power, which has cleared the way for resumption of long-term electricity supply from the plant. The facility had remained largely idle for nearly six months due to high imported coal prices and the absence of a supply agreement.

As per the order, a government-appointed committee will fix benchmark tariffs for the electricity generated from the plant. DeshGujarat
