Relief for farmers: Gujarat extends deadline for land purchase payment till Dec 2026

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government on Friday announced that Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has decided to extend the deadline by one year for tenants to pay the purchase price under Section 32 of the Gujarat Tenancy and Agricultural Lands Act.

As per the Gujarat Tenancy and Agricultural Lands Act, 1948, under Section 32G, the purchase price for farmers/tenants is determined by the Mamlatdar and the Agricultural Tribunal, and the amount is required to be paid within the time limit prescribed by law.

However, several cases have come to notice where tenants could not pay the purchase price due to lack of awareness. In such cases of non-payment, they cannot be considered legal owners. As a result, farmers face difficulties in selling agricultural land or during non-agricultural (NA) conversion procedures.

To address these issues, the state government has, from time to time, taken decisions in the interest of farmers by granting relaxation and extending the time limit for payment of the purchase price.

Considering the representations made by farmers before Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and the number of pending cases as of December 31, 2025, the Chief Minister has adopted a lenient approach in favour of farmers and decided to extend the deadline for tenants to pay the purchase price till December 31, 2026.

As a result of this farmer-centric decision, farmers and tenants will be able to pay the purchase price and obtain legal ownership of the land, the government said.
