Railways Mull Surat – Mumbai Local Train Service; Station to Get Two New Platforms

Surat: Plans are underway to introduce suburban-style (local) train services between Mumbai and Surat as part of a broader long-term strategy to strengthen commuter connectivity along the busy corridor. Railway officials indicated that the initiative is being aligned with the ongoing redevelopment of Surat railway station, where two additional platforms will be constructed to support future operations.

The proposed services are expected to cater to growing passenger demand between the two cities. At present, connectivity is maintained through MEMU (Mainline Electric Multiple Unit) services running between Virar and Surat, along with several long-distance trains, both of which have seen strong commuter uptake.

Instead of conventional suburban local trains, officials are considering deploying upgraded MEMU rakes better suited for intercity travel. These trains are likely to offer enhanced passenger amenities, including onboard toilets, making them more viable for longer distances.

In addition, the railways are evaluating the introduction of Namo Bharat train services on the route. These trains, featuring a mix of air-conditioned and non-AC coaches, have already been rolled out on the Ahmedabad–Bhuj sector under Western Railway and have received a positive response from passengers.

Another option under consideration is the Vande Metro, a self-propelled train system derived from the Vande Bharat platform. Designed for regional travel, Vande Metro trains operate at speeds of up to 130 kmph and offer a metro-like experience with both seating and standing capacity. A standard 12-coach configuration can accommodate over 1,100 seated passengers and more than 2,000 standing commuters.

The suburban-style services are expected to be introduced after the completion of the additional platforms at Surat station. The expansion is part of a major redevelopment project valued at approximately ₹1,500 crore, with around 45% of Phase 1 work already completed. The overall project is targeted for completion by December 2027.

As part of the redevelopment, Surat station will be transformed into a multimodal transport hub, integrating rail services with city buses, BRTS, auto-rickshaws, and taxis. Plans also include improved pedestrian infrastructure, parking facilities, and road connectivity to ease congestion and enhance passenger movement.

Looking ahead, provisions have been made to link the station with a future Metro network, enabling direct connectivity to the airport. Additionally, the project includes plans for a high-rise commercial complex within the station premises, further positioning Surat as a key urban transit hub in the region. DeshGujarat
