Gujarat Local Polls Announcement Likely today

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat State Election Commission will hold a media briefing this evening and is expected to announce the schedule for the upcoming local body elections in the state.

According to an official communication, the briefing will take place at 5:00 pm at the State Election Commission office in the Secretariat, Gandhinagar. Reports suggest that election dates for local self-government bodies may be announced.

Elections are due for 15 municipal corporations, around 84 municipalities, 34 district panchayats, and 260 taluka panchayats across the state. In addition to general elections, by-elections for 13 vacant seats in 11 municipalities will also be conducted. In total, polling will be held for around 10,000 seats across the state.

Earlier, the Commission had stated that the final electoral rolls for these elections would be published on April 1, 2026, after releasing draft rolls and inviting claims and objections.

As per the draft electoral rolls, approximately 2.74 crore voters are expected to participate in the elections. The preliminary lists were prepared at the local level by Electoral Registration Officers and include voters across municipal corporations, municipalities, and panchayat bodies.

The local polls are expected to witness a triangular contest among the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the main opposition Congress, and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). DeshGujarat
