According to Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar, a Gujarati in Assam is ghuspetiya, comparable to an illegal Bangladeshi in India

Ahmedabad: The controversy over offensive remarks targeting Gujarat and Gujaratis has resurfaced, this time involving Congress leader Kanhaiya Kumar. He has drawn sharp criticism after referring to Union Home Minister Amit Shah as an “infiltrator from Gujarat” (in Assam). The statement has been widely condemned as objectionable, divisive, and insensitive, with critics alleging that it reflects a pattern of remarks by opposition leaders perceived as targeting Gujarat or its people.
During a Congress party rally in Bongaigaon, Assam, Kumar said – “The biggest infiltrator has come from Gujarat and he needs to be chased out of here along with Himanta Biswa Sarma.” He made these comments while referring to the BJP’s stance on driving out Bangladeshi infiltrators from Assam.
The statement is being seen as derogatory not only towards Amit Shah but also towards the people of Gujarat. Calling someone an “infiltrator” based on their home state is inappropriate and undermines the idea of national unity. The statement quickly went viral, triggering strong reactions on social media.
Reacting to his remarks, a Twitter user said, “Kanhaiya Kumar’s venomous ‘biggest ghuspaithiya from Gujarat’ attack on Gujaratis reeks of his toxic Tukde Tukde ideology. From JNU’s ‘Bharat tere tukde honge’ to stoking regional hate, this divisive traitor still peddles anti-India venom.”
Another Tweeple wrote, “Elite Arrogance Exposed: Unable to win Gujarat on merit, Congress leaders resort to regional slürs “illiterate” from Kharge, now “ghuspaitiyas” from Kanhaiya kumar. Their mindset is clear: If you don’t vote for us, you’re either uneducated fools or illegal intruders. Pure ven0m against a progressive state.”

A netizen remarked , “First Kharge calls Gujaratis ‘illiterate’. Now Kanhaiya Kumar brands them ‘ghuspaitiyas’. Congress’s hatred for Gujarat & Gujaratis knows no bounds. From insulting an entire community to open contempt this is the ‘inclusive’ India they want? Gujarat is watching. India is watching,”
Another comment in reaction stated, “Kanhaiya Kumar is NOT a leader he is just a member of Scamgress who has foul mouth and the Scamgress team sends him to circulate Lies and Rubbish He never won an Election and he doesn’t hold any position, please refrain from using the word leader on this Chapri,”
One user pointed out, “After Mallikarjun Kharge, now Kanhaiya Kumar targets Gujaratis, first calling them illiterate, and now branding them as “ghuspaitiyas.” Congress continues to insult Gujaratis and North Indians with shocking consistency. This isn’t a slip of tongue anymore, it reflects a deeper disdain for an entire state and its people.”
Another added,”Why does Congress continue to insult Gujaratis and North Indians with such shocking consistency? Can you hate your own countrymen and still hope to win democratic elections?”
In the same speech, Kumar further alleged that “all thieves have gathered together and joined the BJP.” The remarks have also been criticised by the BJP, which views them as a direct insult to Gujarat and its people.
Reacting to the statement, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said, “Insulting the public—insulting Gujaratis—has become the very identity of the Congress party… The Congress has exposed its anti-Gujarat mindset. The Gujarat Congress and Akhilesh Yadav must clarify whether they endorse these statements. The Election Commission should take action.”
The remarks are the latest in a series of controversial statements by opposition leaders targeting Gujarat, which seemingly aim to create friction between different regions of India. By targeting Gujaratis while speaking in states like Assam or Kerala, such rhetoric is seen as promoting regionalism.
Furthermore, these comments go against the spirit of the Constitution, which guarantees every citizen the right to travel, live, and work in any part of the country. By calling Gujaratis “infiltrators,” Kumar has attacked the very basic spirit of the Constitution, which his party leaders are often seen carrying in their hands.
This incident follows closely on the heels of another controversy involving Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who had referred to Gujaratis as “illiterates” during a rally in Kerala.
While Kharge later expressed regret(but not apology), saying his remarks were misinterpreted, the surfacing of Kumar’s video has reignited the debate over whether such language undermines national unity and isn’t it racist and divisive. DeshGujarat
