7-Term BJP MP Mansukh Vasava Announces Retirement from Lok Sabha Contests
April 12, 2026
BHARUCH –Mansukh Vasava, the veteran Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament from the Bharuch-Narmada constituency, has officially announced that he will not contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The announcement, made on April 12, 2026, marks the end of a long and influential career for Vasava, who has represented the party for seven consecutive terms.
Vasava said: ‘I became MLA in 1995 from Rajpipla and minister in then Keshubhai Patel government. I have been winning Bharuch Lok Sabha seat since 1998 continuously though it is open (general category seat). It is natural that many other workers of party would like to come to this field. And therefore I should make a way to create opportunity for other workers. Party should think through that angle. BJP is disciplined cadre based party and it has a spirit of ‘not me but you’. And so the party should select someone else as its candidate from this seat when next Lok Sabha election comes…..Some young people who can take along the cadres with them and who are believer in party ideology should be projected by party. There are many karyakartas who are also eager to contest.’
Passing the Torch to Youth
Explaining the rationale behind his decision, the veteran leader stated that it is time for younger party workers to be given an opportunity to lead. Vasava emphasized that the party should focus on preparing the next generation of leaders to ensure continued growth.
“The time has come for youth workers to get a chance,” Vasava remarked, adding that the party needs to start preparing a second line of leadership immediately.
Advice to the BJP Leadership
Beyond his personal decision, Vasava offered strategic advice to the BJP regarding candidate selection. He urged the party to maintain alternative candidates and engage in long-term planning. He cautioned against implementing new rules or making sudden changes right as elections approach, noting that such moves can hinder the party’s ability to find suitable, winning candidates.
Political Context and Legacy
This announcement comes while Vasava is actively campaigning for local self-government elections. His decision follows a similar move by another high-profile leader, Ketan Inamdar, the MLA from Savli, who recently declared he would not contest the next assembly elections.
Throughout his seven terms, Mansukh Vasava has been known for his aggressive political style and outspoken nature, which frequently kept him in the headlines. In the tribal regions of the state, his political rivalry with Chaitar Vasava has been a defining feature of the local landscape.
With Vasava stepping aside, the Bharuch-Narmada seat is now poised for a transition in leadership, opening doors for a new face to represent the BJP in the national parliament. However Vasava had even in the past announced his retirement but contested the elections again and again. DeshGujarat
