Gandhinagar: After a gap of nearly nine months, power supply from Tata’s Coastal Power Company Limited plant at Mundra in Kutch has resumed, providing relief to Gujarat amid rising electricity demand due to increasing temperatures across the state.

The plant, which had remained non-operational since July last year, began gradual generation from April 1. At present, around 1,050 MW of electricity is being supplied to the state grid from the facility. With the onset of summer, power consumption has started climbing steadily, with the state recording a peak demand of 23,900 MW on Monday.

Meanwhile, renewable energy generation has also increased due to favourable weather conditions. Solar power is contributing around 9,400 MW to the grid, while wind energy accounts for approximately 1,850 MW.

Officials said overall demand has not yet reached peak seasonal levels. Due to merit order restrictions under regulatory mechanisms, generation from state-owned power plants remains relatively low. On Monday, Gujarat State Electricity Corporation Limited (GSECL) supplied around 2,400 MW to the grid.

The state is currently receiving about 6,400 MW from the central sector as per its allocation, and no power is being procured from power exchanges at present.

In addition, around 1,200 MW is being sourced from Adani’s power plants in Mundra, while Essar’s power unit is supplying nearly 180 MW.

Officials added that demand from the agricultural sector is yet to peak, with current consumption in the segment ranging between 8,000 MW and 8,500 MW. DeshGujarat
