In Rural Gujarat, BJP Maintains its Vote Share, Wins over 72% of Total Seats

Japan K Pathak, Gandhinagar: Ruling Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) achieved 52.23% vote share in District Panchayat elections in 2026, which is similar to 52.88% votes share it enjoyed in 2021 local polls, which was up from 45.42% in 2015 local polls(post Patidar quota agitation).

The main opposition Congress party’s vote share however is down from around 38% to around 33% between 2021 and 2026. AAP vote share has gone up from 2.59% to 12.4% between 2021 and 2026.

If you look at the seats won, Congress and AAP are far away at 136 and 58 numbers respectively compared to BJP’s 892-seat victory in 2026. BJP has won 81.83% seats, compared to 12.48% seats to Congress and 5.32% seats to AAP in District Panchayats.

In Taluka Panchayats, BJP has achieved 51% vote share in 2026 which is similar to 51.20% in 2021.

Congress vote share has gone down from 38% to 32.89%. AAP vote share has gone up from 2.56% in 2021 to 12.67% in 2026.

In Taluka Panchayat elections in 2026, BJP has won 70.28% seats, compared to 20.08% seats to Congress and 7.78% seats to AAP.

If we take total number of seats of Taluka and District Panchayats up for election(and those won uopposed), BJP has won 72.27% seats in rural Gujarat in 2026 local polls.

Thus BJP has proved its dominance, not just in urban areas that witnessed Municipal Corporation and Municipality elections, but also in rural Gujarat.
