Ahmedabad Metro Ridership Surges 66% on IPL Final Day; GMRC Records 1.96 Lakh Footfall

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Metro Rail Corporation (GMRC) recorded a sharp rise in passenger traffic during the IPL 2026 final held at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera on May 31, with total metro ridership increasing by 66% compared to the previous Sunday.

According to GMRC, a total of 1,95,868 passenger journeys were recorded across the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Metro network on Sunday, up from 1,17,939 journeys registered on May 24. To manage the surge in demand from cricket fans attending the IPL final, GMRC operated 62 additional metro train services over and above its regular schedule.

Although metro services had initially been planned to operate until 12:30 am, services were extended further to accommodate passengers returning from the stadium after the match.

The last train from Motera Metro Station towards APMC departed at 2:19 am, while the final train from Old High Court Metro Station left at 2:45 am. The last train from Motera towards Gandhinagar departed at 12:24 am.

Of the total ridership on May 31, Phase-1 of the metro network accounted for 1,77,106 passenger journeys, compared to 1,03,545 journeys on May 24. Phase-2 recorded 18,762 passenger journeys, up from 14,394 a week earlier.

GMRC thanked commuters for using the metro services in a disciplined manner and acknowledged the support extended by the Ahmedabad Police and the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in managing passenger movement during the high-profile sporting event. DeshGujarat
