Gujarat HC Refuses to Halt Road Widening Near Narendra Modi Stadium
June 02, 2026
Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court has refused to intervene in the Amdavad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) decision to widen an approach road leading to the Narendra Modi Stadium and Sardar Patel Sports Complex in Motera.
A vacation bench of Justice L.S. Pirzada declined to grant interim relief to four petitioners who had challenged AMC’s move to expand the existing road into a 100-foot-wide corridor. The petitioners argued that the road-widening project lacked a genuine public purpose and was not necessary.
Opposing the plea, AMC informed the court that the road serves as a key access route to the Narendra Modi Stadium and Sardar Patel Sports Complex, both of which are expected to play an important role in Ahmedabad’s preparations for major international sporting events, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
AMC further submitted that all statutory procedures had been followed, public objections were invited and considered, and the Standing Committee had approved the project after due deliberation. The civic body argued that there was no justification for judicial intervention at the interim stage.
The road-widening project is expected to improve traffic flow, enhance emergency access and strengthen connectivity to the Motera sports hub, a key centre of Ahmedabad’s sporting and urban development plans. DeshGujarat
