Morbi Ceramic Gas Demand Rebounds 20-Fold in Three Months: GEL

Ahmedabad: Gujarat Energy Ltd (GEL), formerly known as Gujarat Gas, has reported a strong recovery in natural gas demand from the Morbi ceramic industry, with consumption rising more than 20-fold between March and May 2026.

Gas consumption by ceramic units in Morbi increased from 0.36 MMSCMD in March to around 8 MMSCMD by the last week of May, while the number of units using piped natural gas (PNG) rose from 83 to 710, the company said.

GEL Managing Director Avantika Singh Aulakh said the Morbi ceramic cluster remains the company’s largest industrial PNG customer and that GEL’s supply strategy helped support the industry during the difficult period between March and May.

The recovery comes after a gas supply crisis earlier this year, when more than 700 ceramic units in Morbi were forced to halt operations for nearly a month due to supply disruptions linked to developments in West Asia. Gas consumption in the cluster had fallen to just 0.36 MMSCMD by the end of March.

Industry sources said many ceramic manufacturers have shifted from long-term gas contracts to shorter monthly agreements amid concerns over fuel availability.

PNG prices for Morbi industries have also increased from ₹41.6 per SCM to ₹75 per SCM, compared to ₹68 per SCM for industrial consumers elsewhere in Gujarat.

Separately, GEL said it connected 86 residential societies, covering around 13,000 households, to its PNG network between March and May. DeshGujarat
