June 05, 2026
Rajkot: Rajkot has emerged as one of the top five performing districts in the country under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, earning national recognition for its implementation of the rooftop solar scheme. The achievement comes as Gujarat secured multiple national awards during the “Month of Solar – May 2026” campaign conducted by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE).
According to official figures, Rajkot received around 95,000 applications under the scheme, of which 74,065 households have already been provided with rooftop solar installations. The district’s performance placed it among the top five districts nationwide, with Lucknow ranking first, followed by Nagpur, Surat, Ahmedabad, and Rajkot.
Across Gujarat, a total of 3,52,624 applications were received through 12 power distribution circles, resulting in solar installations at 2,52,804 households. These installations have a combined generation capacity of 264 MW. The government has also disbursed subsidies worth ₹641 crore to 2,40,312 beneficiaries under the scheme, officials said.
Gujarat’s power distribution companies, particularly Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited (PGVCL), were commended for their performance in implementing the programme. The state received national awards in the Category-B States segment from the MNRE.
The awards were presented at a national function held at Atal Akshay Urja Bhavan in New Delhi on the occasion of the completion of two years of the PM Surya Ghar scheme. Union Minister Pralhad Joshi presented the awards to GUVNL Managing Director Shalini Agarwal and PGVCL Managing Director Ketan Joshi.
In addition to the category award, Gujarat also received the PM Surya Ghar Excellence Award in recognition of the outstanding performance of the state’s power utilities, including PGVCL, in expanding rooftop solar adoption and facilitating subsidy disbursement. DeshGujarat
