ONGC Gets Environmental Clearance to Drill 600 New Oil Wells Across North Gujarat
June 10, 2026
Ahmedabad: In a major development for Gujarat’s petroleum sector, the Mehsana Asset of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has received environmental clearance from the Central Government for the drilling of 600 new oil and gas wells across four districts of North Gujarat.
The approval is expected to significantly boost crude oil and natural gas production in the region. According to the proposal submitted by ONGC, onshore developmental drilling and hydrocarbon production activities will be undertaken in 37 Petroleum Mining Lease (PML) blocks spread across Mehsana, Patan, Gandhinagar, and Ahmedabad districts.
The Ministry issued the final approval on May 25, 2026, after evaluating the project under the provisions of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) Notification dated September 14, 2006.
The project involves onshore developmental drilling and production from 600 wells located across the 37 PML blocks. The expansion is expected to strengthen domestic oil and gas output while attracting investment worth several crores of rupees.
Industry observers believe the project will also generate substantial employment opportunities in transportation, construction, engineering, and other support services across the region. Following the environmental clearance, ONGC is expected to begin preparations for drilling sites and associated infrastructure in the coming months. DeshGujarat
