Gujarat Plans ‘Ultra Mega’ Industry Category in New Industrial Policy

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government is planning to create a new category of industries in its upcoming industrial policy. This category will be called ‘ultra mega’, according to a news report.

As per the TOI report, the new industrial policy is set to be announced later this month and, according to the draft policy, ultra mega units will be defined as enterprises operating in identified thrust sectors with a minimum investment of ₹10,000 crore and employment generation of at least 3,000 people.

The proposed policy also seeks to expand the number of thrust sectors from the current nine to 16, broadening the scope of industries eligible for special incentives and support.

Currently, industrial projects involving investments exceeding ₹10,000 crore are classified as “mega industries” and can receive customised benefits under the state’s Atmanirbhar Gujarat scheme. The new policy aims to create a separate framework for larger investments by formally recognising them as “ultra mega” industries.

It is learnt that the new sectors proposed for inclusion in the thrust-sector list include semiconductor ancillary manufacturing, nuclear power equipment production, vehicle scrapping, e-waste recycling, textile waste recycling, shipping container manufacturing and heavy earth-moving equipment manufacturing.
