BIS Raids Jewellery Shops ‘Selling’ Gold Without Hallmark in Surat

Surat: Officials of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) conducted raids on two jewellery shops in Surat on June 18 and seized around 230 grams of gold jewellery that was allegedly being sold without the mandatory BIS hallmark.
The raids were carried out at Shri Madhav Jewellers in Dindoli and Siddhanath Jewellers on L.H. Road. During the inspection, BIS officials found approximately 200 grams of unhallmarked gold jewellery at Shri Madhav Jewellers and around 30 grams at Siddhanath Jewellers.
It is noteworthy that the sale of gold jewellery without a BIS hallmark is prohibited under the Hallmarking of Gold Jewellery and Gold Artifacts Order.
Under the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, manufacturers and traders are not permitted to sell or stock gold jewellery without a BIS hallmark.
