Parimal Nathwani Unveils Memorial Board Honouring Gir Lion Duo ‘Jay-Veeru’
July 07, 2026
Sasan Gir: In a moving tribute to Gir’s most famous and beloved lion duo, renowned lion enthusiast and Rajya Sabha MP, Parimal Nathwani, unveiled a backlit board installation featuring ‘Jay-Veeru’ at Sinh Sadan and the Devaliya Safari Park in Sasan Gir.
The installation stands as a heartfelt tribute from Nathwani to the iconic lions, who held a very special place in his heart. The unveiling ceremony was attended by the Conservator of Forests (Wildlife Circle, Junagadh), Ram Ratan Nala, along with his team of forest officials.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the initiative, Parimal Nathwani said, “We want every tourist and wildlife lover visiting Sasan Gir to know the legacy of Jay-Veeru. They were one of the most fearless, majestic, and inseparable lion duos Gir has ever seen. They were the true pride of Gir, and through these boards, we aim to immortalize their memory.”
Nathwani also shared his deeply personal connection to the duo, recalling that he was actively involved alongside forest department officials in naming them—making this tribute deeply sentimental.
The Legacy of Jay and Veeru:
Jay and Veeru tragically passed away last year following a territorial clash with other lions. Immediately following their demise on August 7, 2025, Nathwani released a soulful folk-style song titled “Jay-Veeru Ni Jodi” and an emotional documentary titled “Jay-Veeru Ni Amar Gatha.” Both projects beautifully captured the spirit, unbreakable bond, and enduring legacy of the two big cats.
Reminiscent of the legendary characters from the cult Bollywood movie Sholay, Jay and Veeru’s real-life companionship transcended the silver screen. Gir’s wildlife enthusiasts and seasoned trackers often recount the numerous adventures of the formidable pair. Despite occasional squabbles and territorial tussles, their bond remained unbroken as they jointly ruled over the realms of Malanka, Kenedipur, Natadia, Itadi, and Limadra. DeshGujarat
