Bhuj: Ashish Shantibhai Kansara, a renowned artist of Kutch’s world-famous Rogan art, has been conferred with an honorary Doctor of Literature (D.Litt) degree by the Lucknow-based Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU). Kansara was honoured with the honorary D.Litt degree in recognition of his contribution to the field of Rogan art.

The honour was conferred during the university’s 24th convocation ceremony, which was held on July 7, 2026, and was presided over by the Governor of Uttar Pradesh and Chancellor of the university, Anandiben Patel.

Kansara, who hails from Madhapar near Bhuj in Kutch district, is widely recognised as a leading practitioner of the traditional and endangered Rogan painting art. He is an authorised GI (GI-718)-registered artisan of Rogan art.

He has not only preserved and promoted this rare art form but has also made a significant contribution by training local women in Rogan art, helping them become self-reliant. His efforts have played a vital role in passing this traditional craft on to the next generation.

This honorary recognition is being seen as another significant acknowledgement of India’s ancient and unique artistic heritage at the global level. It also honours the contribution of artisans who have dedicated themselves to preserving the country’s rich cultural legacy. DeshGujarat
