SMC Warns Builder of Criminal Action Over Illegal Basement Digging in Althan

Surat: The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has initiated action against a construction project of the Jainam Group in the Althan area for allegedly carrying out unauthorised basement excavation without obtaining the required civic permissions.

According to the SMC, the illegal excavation at Sub Plot No. A of Final Plot No. 36 in TP Scheme No. 37 (Althan South) triggered a landslide on July 2, 2026, creating a serious safety risk in the surrounding area.

Following the incident, the civic body’s Zone-7 office had issued a prohibitory order and a show-cause notice to the builder. A written complaint was also sent to Althan Police Station alleging non-compliance with the Municipal Corporation’s directions.

The SMC said it has taken the matter seriously and has now directed the builder to immediately begin filling the excavated basement and restore the site to a safe condition. The builder has been instructed to level the entire area within one day of receiving the notice.

Municipal officials warned that if the builder fails to comply with the directions, the civic body will initiate stringent legal action, including criminal proceedings.

The civic body said the action has been taken to prevent any further danger to nearby properties and ensure public safety. DeshGujarat
