Dholera to Set Up 200 MLD Seawater Desalination Plant; DPR Process Underway

Dholera: Dholera Industrial City Development Limited (DICDL) has planned to set up a seawater desalination plant with a capacity of 200 MLD (million litres per day) to meet the long-term water needs of Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR), India’s first greenfield smart industrial city. The process of appointing a consultant to prepare a techno-economic feasibility assessment and detailed project report (DPR) for this greenfield project has been initiated.

Water security for industries

Dholera, being located near the Gulf of Khambhat, has abundant seawater resources, which can be used to provide high-quality industrial water and potable water to industries. The proposed plant will ensure an uninterrupted water supply, especially for high-value industries like semiconductor manufacturing, green hydrogen, renewable energy, and chemicals. This alternative water source will enable Dholera to combat climate change.

Eco-friendly and smart technology

The project is not limited to conventional desalination only but also emphasizes modern methods like ‘renewable energy integration’ and ‘zero liquid discharge’ (ZLD). DICDL is exploring the possibility of using solar parks or other renewable energy sources in Dholera for this plant to reduce the carbon footprint. In addition, there are plans to recover resources from the saline water (brine) generated during the desalination process and implement the principles of the ‘circular economy’.

The plant will be fully automated and will utilize digital engineering technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), digital twin-based asset management, SCADA, and AI (Artificial Intelligence) to optimize plant operations.

Project Outline

The consultant for this project will be selected through the ‘Least Cost Selection’ (LCS) method. The consultant will complete the field study, technology selection, environmental impact assessment (EIA), and preparation of tender documents within a period of 11 months. DeshGujarat
