July 19, 2026
Amreli: A 15-year-old Asiatic lion was found dead in the Pattharmala revenue area under the Rabarika Round of the Khambha-Tulsishyam Range in the Dhari East forest division of Amreli district on Sunday, taking the lion death toll in the past two months to six.
The decomposed carcass was spotted by a local Maldhari, who informed forest officials. A team later reached the spot and conducted a post-mortem examination. Dhari East Deputy Conservator of Forests Vikas Yadav said the lion died of natural causes due to old age, adding that 15 years is considered an advanced age for an Asiatic lion in the wild.
Although officials have ruled out foul play in the latest case, the death comes amid a series of lion fatalities reported from different parts of Amreli district. In recent weeks, lion cubs have died in territorial fights in the Paniya and Savarkundla ranges, while other deaths have been reported from Hamapur village in Bagsara, the Dalkhaniya Range, and Meriyana.
