Ahmedabad Police Raid Illegal Ambika Fireworks Godowns, Seize Rs 39.57 Crore Stock; Two Held

Ahmedabad: Days after the deadly blast in an illegal fireworks factory in Vastral that claimed 10 lives, authorities have intensified their crackdown on illegal firecracker storage units. On Tuesday, the Changodar police raided two illegal fireworks godowns and seized firecrackers worth Rs 39.57 crore, while arresting two persons in connection with the case.

The accused have been identified as Amit Kumar Modi, owner of the godowns and a resident of Satyagraha Society under Satellite police station limits in Ahmedabad, and Kishan Patel, the manager. Police said Modi operates a fireworks shop under the name Ambika Fireworks in Shivranjani, while shops with the same name also operate in Vadodara and Bavla.

During the raid, police seized 65,954 cartons of fireworks from the two godowns, both operating under the name Ambika Tradelink. A case has been registered against the accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Explosives Act, and further investigation is underway.

According to police, the illegal godowns came to light while a Changodar police team was on patrol. Acting on a tip-off, officers raided two sheds located opposite each other on the Modasar-Amthapura Road.

Investigators found large quantities of fireworks packed in cartons of different sizes inside both godowns. Although a few fire extinguishers and a bucket filled with sand were kept near the entrance, officials said the fire safety arrangements were grossly inadequate considering the volume of explosives stored on the premises. No water sprinkler system was found inside the sheds.

Police also found cartons of fireworks stored outside one of the godowns under a temporary thatched shed covered with thick cloth, which officials said significantly increased the risk of fire or an explosion.

Police said the investigation will now focus on the company’s legal structure, the role of other responsible persons, the validity and scope of the explosives licence, sanctioned storage capacity, approved building plans, and compliance with mandatory safety norms. DeshGujarat
