Builder Couple Booked for Duping IPS Officer in Ahmedabad Flat Deal

Ahmedabad: An IPS officer currently serving as Additional Director in the Gujarat Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has lodged a police complaint against a builder couple, alleging they cheated him and his late father of Rs 70.3 lakh by taking money for a flat and two residential plots but neither executing the sale deeds nor refunding the amount.

Based on the complaint, Chandkheda police have registered an FIR against Amit Jani and his wife, Jignasha Jani, under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for cheating and criminal conspiracy. The FIR also includes sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act after the officer alleged that the couple made caste-based remarks against his family.

According to the complaint filed by Pravinsinh Mal, he first met the couple in 2014 while serving as Superintendent of Police in Sabarkantha. The couple allegedly claimed to be real estate developers with projects in Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Jamnagar, and Halol.

Mal alleged that between 2014 and 2019, he and his father paid the couple Rs 61.2 lakh for a flat and other property investments. His father, he claimed, invested his pension savings and income from agriculture based on the assurances given by the couple. The complaint further states that Amit Jani did not issue any receipts for the payments.

The FIR states that the couple later offered a flat at Belvedere, Godrej Garden City, Jagatpur, to adjust the earlier payments. They allegedly handed over possession of Flat A-302 in February 2019 through an oral agreement but repeatedly delayed the execution of the sale deed.

The officer further alleged that in 2020, Amit Jani convinced him to pay an additional Rs 9.1 lakh for two residential plots. However, neither the plots were transferred nor was the money returned.

According to the complaint, Mal later found that Amit Jani was not a real estate developer and did not own the plots he had promised to sell. Police have launched an investigation into the allegations. DeshGujarat
