Surat: A dead rat was allegedly found in a serving of Manchurian at a Chinese food outlet in the Sachin area of Surat, triggering concerns over food hygiene standards and prompting action by the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC).
The incident took place at Jai Hanuman Chinese Center in Palli village under Ward No. 30 of Sachin South Zone-B. According to officials, a customer who had ordered Manchurian noticed a black object in the dish just before eating it. On closer inspection, it was found to be a dead rat.
The customer immediately stopped eating the food and recorded a video of the contaminated dish, which later surfaced on social media. The incident has raised serious concerns over hygiene standards at food establishments in the city. Fortunately, the customer spotted the contamination before consuming the food, preventing what could have resulted in food poisoning or other health complications.

Following the circulation of the video, the SMC Health Department inspected the outlet and found unhygienic conditions on the premises.
Food Safety Officer T.S. Patel said, “After the video came to our notice, we inspected the premises and found unhygienic conditions. We have issued a notice directing the operator to clean the premises within three days, carry out pest control measures, and submit a compliance report.”
He added that the food outlet will be allowed to resume operations only after obtaining clearance from the Health Department. The department has also imposed a Rs 1,000 fine on the establishment for unhygienic conditions.
The incident has once again put the spotlight on food safety and hygiene standards at eateries in Surat, with questions being raised over the frequency of inspections and enforcement by the civic authorities. DeshGujarat
