Gujarat Govt Destroys Seized Drugs Worth Rs 2,153 Crore; Dy CM Oversees Destruction at Dahej

Dahej: As part of the Gujarat government’s drive towards a drug-free state, Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi on Monday oversaw the destruction of narcotics worth Rs 2,153 crore at a special programme organised by Enviro Infrastructure Limited in Dahej, Bharuch, a press release said.

According to the press release, the destroyed consignment included 13,249.127 kg of narcotic drugs and 5,71,028 bottles of narcotic substances seized in 867 cases by 24 police units across the state. Sanghavi also virtually inaugurated a similar narcotics disposal programme at Lakadia in Kutch’s Bhachau.

Before the destruction, Sanghavi and members of the Drug Disposal Committee inspected the seized contraband and reviewed case records. The narcotics were scientifically destroyed in an environmentally safe manner in line with the Centre’s “Drug-Free India” mission and zero-tolerance policy against drugs, the press release said.

The seized drugs were linked to cases investigated by police units from Bharuch, Narmada, Surat City and Rural, Navsari, Tapi, Dahod, Chhota Udepur, Panchmahal, Dang, Valsad, Vadodara City and Rural, Anand, Kheda, Ahmedabad City and Rural, Gandhinagar, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, CID Crime, ATS, and the Western Railway Police.

A programme was also held at GACL in Dahej, where the Gujarat Police’s Anti-Narcotics Task Force unveiled an NDPS Handbook to help investigating officers strengthen enforcement of the NDPS Act. The event also featured an awareness film on a drug-free Gujarat and testimonials from people who had overcome addiction.

Addressing the gathering, Sanghavi said drugs remain one of society’s biggest threats and praised the Gujarat Police for cracking down on organised drug syndicates, including international smuggling networks. He said narcotics worth thousands of crores have been seized during the state’s anti-drug campaign over the past one-and-a-half years.

The Deputy CM said Gujarat’s conviction rate in drug-related cases is around 65%, adding that efforts are underway to raise it to 100% by further strengthening investigations and legal action. He also highlighted the police’s rehabilitation efforts, saying officers counsel drug users and their families to help them overcome addiction.

Calling for greater public participation in the anti-drug campaign, Sanghavi said a drug-free Gujarat can only be achieved through collective efforts alongside strict law enforcement.

During the event, 278 police personnel were honoured under the State Government’s Drug Reward Policy with cash rewards totalling Rs 59.42 lakh for their role in solving 21 major drug-related cases. DeshGujarat
