Gujarat Rains: EMRI 108 Teams Assist in 75 Childbirth Cases Amid Flooding

Ahmedabad: Amid widespread flooding caused by days of heavy rainfall in Gujarat, EMRI 108 emergency teams have gone the extra mile to ensure timely medical care for pregnant women, assisting in nearly 75 childbirth-related emergencies over the past five days.

One such rescue took place on July 25 in Transad village of Dholka, where a 20-year-old pregnant woman went into labour. Flooded roads prevented the ambulance from reaching her house. After arriving at the village, the EMRI 108 team, including the driver, an emergency medical technician and two others, walked through waterlogged streets to reach her. They then carried her on a spine board, typically used for patients with spinal injuries, back to the ambulance.

She was rushed to the Community Health Centre in Dholka, where she safely delivered a baby through a normal delivery, a senior EMRI 108 official said.

Officials said continuous heavy to very heavy rainfall over the past five days has submerged roads and disrupted transport in several parts of the state, leading to a surge in emergency calls related to pregnancy. During this period, EMRI 108 teams either transported women in labour to hospitals or assisted in deliveries before they could reach a medical facility in around 75 cases.

In another incident, a woman in her late twenties gave birth to a baby girl by the roadside near Gangad village after floodwaters blocked the route to Koth. With no way to reach the hospital in time, an EMRI 108 emergency medical technician assisted in the delivery at the spot before the mother and newborn were shifted for further care. DeshGujarat
