Ahmedabad Collector Refutes Thuleta Dam Damage Reports, Says Main Structure Intact

Ahmedabad: Ahmedabad Collector Bhavya Verma on Thursday clarified that the Thuleta Dam in Viramgam taluka has not suffered any damage to its main structure, dismissing reports circulating in sections of the media about the condition of the check dam.

According to the Collector, the check dam at Thuleta village received an exceptionally high inflow after Viramgam recorded nearly 10 inches of rainfall, while the upper catchment areas received more than 8 inches. The inflow was nearly double the dam’s designed capacity.

Verma said that although the dam gates were opened in time to release the excess water, the extremely heavy flow caused water to overtop the embankment adjoining the gate structure, resulting in erosion of a portion of the earthen embankment. However, he stressed that the original structure of the check dam remains intact.

As a precautionary measure, the district administration alerted residents of five low-lying villages in advance and safely evacuated them before the situation worsened. Owing to the timely action by the administration, no loss of life or any major untoward incident was reported.

The Collector added that repair work on the eroded embankment will begin within the next one to two days once the water level recedes. DeshGujarat
