Gujarat HC Orders Probe Against Ahmedabad DySP

Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court has ordered an inquiry against an Ahmedabad Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) over allegations that she tried to pressure victims in an alleged custodial torture case into withdrawing legal proceedings against her and other police personnel.

Justice M. R. Mengdey directed the Ahmedabad (Rural) Superintendent of Police to investigate the allegations against DySP Neelam Goswami and submit a report before the court by the next hearing on August 27.

The order came after the court examined an affidavit filed by advocate Anand Yagnik, who had earlier represented the victims in the High Court. In his affidavit, Yagnik alleged that Goswami attempted to influence both him and the complainants to withdraw the cases, and urged the court not to allow the withdrawal. Instead, he sought an inquiry into the alleged coercion.

After considering the affidavit, Justice Mengdey directed the Ahmedabad (Rural) SP to conduct an inquiry into the allegations and place the findings before the court at the next hearing.

The case relates to an incident in September 2025, when Goswami and other police personnel allegedly assaulted five residents of Khoraj village, Maheshji Thakor, Pratapji Thakor, Ravi Thakor, Bholo Thakor, and Alkesh Thakor, inside the Sanand GIDC police station. One of the victims was reportedly hospitalised after the alleged assault. The five later approached a judicial magistrate and also filed a contempt petition before the High Court seeking action against the police officers.

In his affidavit, Yagnik further claimed that Goswami contacted him through folk singer Devayat Khavad and asked him to withdraw from the case. He also alleged that the victims told him they were being threatened by the DySP to withdraw both their complaints and the High Court petition, with warnings of “dire consequences,” including possible detention under the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities (PASA) Act.
