Gujarat Rain Update: Fresh Downpour Batters State Amid IMD Red Alert

Surat: Amid the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) red alert in many parts of the state, heavy rain has been lashing Gujarat.

Update at 10:30 pm –

Rain continued to lash several parts of the state. According to the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC), Ambika taluka was the worst-hit, receiving over 20 inches of rainfall between 6 am and 10 pm today.

During the two-hour period between 8 pm and 10 pm, Ambika recorded 48 mm (1.89 inches) of rainfall, while Dolvan in Tapi district received 55 mm (2.17 inches).

Among the other talukas that witnessed heavy rainfall, Vaso in Kheda district recorded 73 mm (2.87 inches), Virpur in Mahisagar received 68 mm (2.68 inches), Matar in Kheda got 61 mm (2.40 inches), Sojitra in Anand recorded 60 mm (2.36 inches), Valod in Tapi received 56 mm (2.20 inches), and Nadiad in Kheda recorded 51 mm (2.01 inches).

Rainy conditions persisted across many other areas, with Kalol in Gandhinagar district and Sathamba in Aravalli each recording 43 mm (1.69 inches), while Ahmedabad city received 18 mm (0.71 inches) of rainfall during the same period.

– In view of the incessant rains lashing the state and the forecast of heavy rainfall, schools and colleges will remain closed on August 1 in several districts across Gujarat. Holidays have been declared in Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, Bharuch, Narmada, Bhavnagar, Banaskantha, and Vav-Tharad.

Update at 9 pm: Six talukas in Gujarat received over 10 inches of rain between 6 am and 8 pm on July 31:

•  Ambika (Surat) – 467 mm (18.39 inches)
• Dolvan (Tapi) – 345 mm (13.58 inches)
• Vansda (Navsari) – 336 mm (13.23 inches)
• Netrang (Bharuch) – 314 mm (12.36 inches)
• Dharampur (Valsad) – 256 mm (10.08 inches)
• Umarpada (Surat) – 254 mm (10.00 inches)

– Rainfall was recorded in 201 talukas across Gujarat, of which 6 talukas received 10 inches or more, 35 talukas received 5 inches or more, and 74 talukas received 2.5 inches or more. Surat city received 124 mm (4.88 inches) of rain, while Ahmedabad city received 26 mm (1.02 inches).

– As of 2 pm today, a total of 125 talukas have received rain, with Umarpada in Surat district recording the highest at 9.72 inches. It was followed by Nadiad and Vaso in Kheda district, which received 7.52 inches and 6.97 inches, respectively. Other talukas that received very heavy rainfall include Borsad, Khambhat, Netrang, Petlad, Sagbara, Anand, Dolvan, Ambika, Garudeshwar, Areth, Subir, Bardoli and Mahudha, all of which recorded more than 5 inches of rain till 2 pm.

– The administration has gone on alert as the sea has turned rough amid the rainy weather in Amreli district. In view of strong sea currents and rough sea conditions, Local Cautionary Signal No. 3 has been hoisted. The administration is continuously monitoring the coastal areas, including Rajula, Jafrabad and Pipavav.

Update at 12 noon: 29 Talukas Hit by Heavy to Very Heavy Rain (Above 2.5 Inches)

– Several talukas across the state received heavy rainfall between 10 am and 12 noon. The highest rainfall during these two hours was recorded in Umarpada in Surat district at 3.43 inches (87 mm). This was followed by 3.03 inches (77 mm) in Bardoli (Surat), 2.91 inches (74 mm) in Navsari, 2.83 inches (72 mm) in Palsana (Surat), and 2.76 inches (70 mm) in Khambhat (Anand district). In addition, Areth (Surat) received 2.17 inches (55 mm), Vyara (Tapi) 1.97 inches (50 mm), Jhagadia (Bharuch) 1.73 inches (44 mm), while Anand and Borsad recorded 1.65 inches (42 mm) each, making these talukas among the worst affected by rainfall during the 10 am to 12 noon period.

– Rainfall continued to lash several parts of state between 8 am and 10 am on Friday, with Kheda district emerging as the worst-hit during the two-hour period. According to the State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC), Vaso received the highest rainfall of 124 mm, followed by Petlad (104 mm) in Anand district and Nadiad (95 mm) in Kheda.

Other areas recording intense rainfall included Umarpada (85 mm) in Surat, Sojitra (80 mm) and Khambhat (77 mm) in Anand, Songadh (74 mm) and Ukai (71 mm) in Tapi, Netrang (70 mm) in Bharuch and Mahudha (69 mm) in Kheda. Moderate to heavy showers were also reported from Mangrol (65 mm) in Surat, Dediapada (57 mm) in Narmada and Kathlal (54 mm) in Kheda, while rainfall activity continued across several parts of central and south Gujarat.

– As per the latest IMD satellite image and the current rainfall data, rain has been concentrated over the Central Gujarat region, while clouds appear to be moving over Saurashtra. Meanwhile, South Gujarat remains covered under a blanket of clouds.

Up to 4.65 Inches of Rain in 2 Hours This Morning

In just two hours between 6 am and 8 am on Friday, rainfall was recorded in 82 talukas across the state. The highest rainfall of 4.65 inches was recorded in Sagbara and Garudeshwar talukas of Narmada district. Low-lying areas in districts including Surat, Vadodara, Bharuch and Kheda were waterlogged, disrupting normal life, while Chhota Udepur, Sabarkantha and Mahisagar also received moderate to heavy rainfall.

Following the forecast of heavy rain, the state administration has gone on high alert. As a precautionary measure, schools and colleges in nine districts, including Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat, have been closed. During a meeting of the Weather Watch Group chaired by Relief Commissioner Gaurang Makwana in Gandhinagar, all departments were directed to remain fully prepared with rescue teams, equipment and emergency response systems.

Heavy Rain Likely Till August 2

The IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Gujarat until August 2. A red alert has been issued for Ahmedabad, Botad, Bhavnagar, Anand, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Bharuch, Narmada, Surat, Tapi, Navsari, Dang, Valsad, Daman, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. An orange alert has been issued for Rajkot, Amreli, Surendranagar, Gandhinagar, Kheda, Panchmahal and Dahod, while the remaining districts are under a yellow alert due to the possibility of heavy rainfall.

Pavagadh Yatra Postponed; Rescue Teams Deployed in Surat

In view of the heavy rain forecast for Panchmahal district, the Pavagadh Temple Trust has appealed to devotees to postpone their yatra for the next two days. Meanwhile, NDRF and SDRF teams have been deployed in Surat, and two Army teams have also been requisitioned for possible rescue operations. Authorities have begun shifting residents from vulnerable low-lying areas to safer locations and have urged people to avoid unnecessary travel.

Rain Disrupts Normal Life Across Several Districts

Fresh showers in Vadodara led to waterlogging in several areas, including Alkapuri, disrupting traffic. In Bharuch, Kasak Circle, Sevashram Road and the Furja Bandar area also witnessed waterlogging. In Nadiad, more than one inch of rainfall inundated several localities.

Heavy rainfall in Chhota Udepur district triggered flash floods in the Heran and Ashwin rivers. A youth who was swept away by the strong current in the Ashwin River near Naswadi was rescued, while the rubber dam on the Heran River also overflowed.

With the threat of flash floods looming once again in Surat, the Surat Municipal Corporation has started evacuating residents from vulnerable areas. The Mayor and senior civic officials visited the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) and other sensitive locations to review preparedness.

Four Weather Systems Active

According to the IMD, four weather systems, a deep depression, the monsoon trough, an upper air cyclonic circulation and a western disturbance, are currently influencing weather conditions over Gujarat. Their combined impact is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and wind speeds of 40–50 kmph across parts of the state over the next two days.
