Surat Extends Holiday for Schools, Colleges on August 1 as Heavy Rain Continues

Surat: As the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy rainfall in Surat district, the district administration has declared a holiday in all schools, anganwadis, colleges and ITIs on Saturday, August 1, keeping in mind the safety of students. This will be the second consecutive day that educational institutions across the Surat Municipal Corporation area, municipalities and the entire rural area of the district will remain closed due to heavy rain.

Based on the District Magistrate’s notification dated July 31, the district education administration has instructed all educational institutions to strictly implement the order. Schools have also been informed that the academic work disrupted due to the holidays declared earlier and now will be compensated for later on a local holiday or another suitable day.

Meanwhile, continuous heavy rain in Surat city and across South Gujarat has disrupted normal life. Many low-lying areas of the city have been flooded, while the Bhedawad creek has also overflowed. Areas including VIP Road, Pandesara, Katargam and Dabholi are facing severe waterlogging. In the Limbayat area, the administration has barricaded a stretch of road after a cave-in.

Keeping in view the seriousness of the situation, the district administration has already ordered all factories in the district to remain closed for two days. An Army team has also been mobilised from Vadodara to Surat for relief and rescue operations.

The district administration has appealed to people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay in safe places in view of the continuing heavy rainfall. DeshGujarat
