Widespread Rains Lash Gujarat on Saturday Morning; Here’s Taluka-Wise Details

Ahmedabad: Heavy rain continued to lash several parts of Gujarat on Saturday morning, though the main rain-bearing system has now shifted towards Saurashtra and north-central Gujarat, triggering intense rainfall in Surendranagar, Morbi, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhavnagar districts. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), Surendranagar received the highest rainfall in the state between 6 am and 12 noon, while several parts of Morbi and other districts of Saurashtra also witnessed heavy showers.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for extremely heavy rainfall in six districts, including Ahmedabad and Rajkot. An orange alert has been sounded for 11 districts, including Amreli and Gandhinagar, while a yellow alert is in place for 13 districts, including Junagadh, Vadodara and Surat. In view of the forecast, schools and colleges have been declared closed in 10 districts.

Between 6 am and 12 noon, Wadhwan in Surendranagar recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 157 mm (6.18 inches), followed by Dhrangadhra with 153 mm (6.02 inches), Lakhtar with 114 mm (4.49 inches), and Muli and Chuda with 93 mm (3.66 inches) each. In Morbi district, Morbi city received 109 mm (4.29 inches), Tankara 93 mm (3.66 inches), Maliya 69 mm and Halvad 65 mm. Tilakwada in Narmada district recorded 103 mm (4.06 inches) of rainfall.

In Rajkot district, Rajkot city received 37 mm of rain, Jasdan 43 mm, Paddhari 31 mm and Lodhika 26 mm. Dhrol in Jamnagar district recorded 40 mm, Jodiya 32 mm and Jamnagar city 28 mm, while Sihor in Bhavnagar district received 42 mm. Ahmedabad city recorded 7 mm of rainfall, while Viramgam received 27 mm and Dehgam in Gandhinagar district 21 mm. Bharuch received 48 mm of rain and Jhagadia 45 mm, while in South Gujarat, Olpad in Surat district received 42 mm, Choryasi 41 mm and Navsari 41 mm.

The impact of the heavy rainfall is being felt across several districts. In Surendranagar’s Lakhtar taluka, Lilapur village has been cut off after the Umai River flooded on one side and the railway underbridge on the other side was submerged. With the main road closed, connectivity between Lakhtar and villages such as Karela, Ingaroli and Savlana has come to a complete standstill. Authorities have also alerted low-lying villages after the Nayaka Dam in Muli and the Vansal Dam in the Chuda region overflowed.

In Saurashtra, the Popatpara Garnala in Rajkot city was closed as a precaution after it filled with water following just two inches of rainfall, while a tree fell on Raiya Road. The gates of the Aji-2 and Bhadar-2 dams have been opened, and warnings have been issued to villages located downstream. In Botad district, several villages have been put on alert after the Ramaghat and Khambhad dams overflowed. Traffic was also disrupted after the Ranpur causeway went under water and an electric pole collapsed.

In South Gujarat, the Purna River in Navsari continued to flow at around 28 feet, remaining above the danger mark. More than 30 percent of the city remained waterlogged, while over 160 roads across the district were closed. In Valsad, floodwaters from the Auranga River left mud and debris across several areas, and more than 70 houses reportedly suffered damage. In Surat, the Rander weir-cum-causeway overflowed by 7.90 metres due to the continuous inflow into the Ukai Dam. The Tapi River is flowing bank-to-bank, and water has once again started entering Saniya Hemad village.

In central Gujarat, around 150 students were evacuated after the Lakshmi Hostel of Sumandeep Vidyapith on Waghodia Road in Vadodara was flooded around midnight. In Dabhoi taluka, 185 people from Behrampura and Rajli villages were shifted to safer locations after the Dhadhar River overflowed. In Ahmedabad, waterlogging was reported at several underpasses, including Chandlodia, while candidates appearing for the SBI PO examination at a centre in Bopal had to wade through mud and water to reach the examination venue.
