Gujarat Govt, GTU, C-DAC Partner to Set Up ChipIN Centre of Excellence in VLSI Design

Gandhinagar: In a significant step towards strengthening Gujarat’s position in India’s rapidly evolving semiconductor landscape, the Government of Gujarat, through the Gujarat State Electronics Mission (GSEM), Department of Science & Technology, in collaboration with Gujarat Technological University (GTU) and the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), Bengaluru, today hosted the Orientation Programme and Kick-off Meeting for the proposed ChipIN Extension Centre and Centre of Excellence (CoE) in VLSI Design, a press release said.
During the programme, experts from C-DAC Bengaluru provided an overview of the national ChipIN initiative, institutional onboarding processes, and advanced semiconductor design infrastructure available through the platform, including Electronic Design Automation (EDA) tools, High Performance Computing (HPC) resources, semiconductor IPs, and tape-out support mechanisms. More than 30 institutions from across Gujarat participated in this orientation programme. Participating institutions were introduced to opportunities for leveraging these resources for semiconductor research, innovation, product development, and talent creation.
As per the government statement, the proposed ChipIN Extension Centre and CoE in VLSI Design is envisioned as a strategic initiative to establish Gujarat as a leading hub for semiconductor design, innovation, and advanced electronics research. By providing access to world-class semiconductor design infrastructure and fostering collaboration among academia, startups, MSMEs, and industry, the Centre will help bridge the gap between research and commercialization while creating a robust pipeline of skilled semiconductor talent.
The initiative is expected to significantly accelerate the growth of Gujarat’s semiconductor ecosystem by enabling academic institutions to undertake advanced chip design projects, supporting startups in developing indigenous semiconductor products, strengthening industry-academia collaboration, and facilitating innovation across emerging domains such as AI accelerators, automotive electronics, RISC-V processors, embedded systems, and IoT technologies. The Centre will also complement the state’s growing semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem by building critical design capabilities and nurturing future-ready talent.
As the nodal agency driving the development of Gujarat’s electronics and semiconductor ecosystem, Gujarat State Electronics Mission (GSEM) is playing a key role in facilitating ecosystem development, stakeholder engagement, academic institution onboarding, and industry collaboration for the proposed initiative. Through such efforts, GSEM aims to strengthen Gujarat’s position as a preferred destination for semiconductor investments, innovation, and talent development while contributing to India’s vision of becoming a global semiconductor powerhouse.
The two-day programme will continue with technical sessions on semiconductor design infrastructure, HPC resources, indigenous processor ecosystems, IoT solutions, and industry best practices in chip development, enabling participants to gain deeper insights into opportunities within India’s rapidly expanding semiconductor sector.
By bringing together world-class design infrastructure, academic excellence, startup innovation, and government support under a unified framework, the initiative has the potential to position Gujarat as a leading semiconductor design and innovation hub, complementing the state’s growing manufacturing ecosystem and advancing India’s journey towards technological self-reliance.
