IMD Warns of Thunderstorms in Parts of Gujarat Till Aug 10; Forecasts Light to Moderate Rainfall

Ahmedabad: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall at isolated places across Gujarat over the next seven days, till August 14. The weather office has also issued a thunderstorm warning for parts of North Gujarat for the next three days, till August 10.

According to the IMD’s latest bulletin issued on August 8, isolated places in several North Gujarat districts are likely to experience light thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, surface winds of 30–40 kmph, and light to moderate rainfall on August 8, 9 and 10.

The districts covered under the warning include Banaskantha, Vav-Tharad, Patan, Mehsana, Sabarkantha, Gandhinagar, Aravalli, Panchmahal, Dahod and Mahisagar.

Meanwhile, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall at isolated places across all districts of Gujarat during the seven-day forecast period ending August 14. The weather office has not issued any yellow, orange or red alert for heavy rainfall in the state during this period.

Weather System

The IMD said the monsoon trough at mean sea level now passes through Anupgarh, Delhi, Deomali, Sidhi and Digha, and extends southeastwards into the Eastcentral Bay of Bengal. It extends up to 3.1 km above mean sea level.

A low-pressure area has also formed over Southwest Bengal and adjoining North Odisha under the influence of an upper-air cyclonic circulation. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and tilts southwestwards with height.

The Western Disturbance, seen as a trough in the middle and upper tropospheric westerlies, also persists, with its axis roughly along 73°E, north of 29°N.

An associated cyclonic circulation lies over Northeast Rajasthan and adjoining areas and extends up to 3.1 km above mean sea level.

The IMD further stated that southwesterly to westerly winds are prevailing at lower levels over the region.
