IMD Issues Orange, Yellow Alerts for Heavy Rain in Parts of Gujarat for Next 48 Hours

Ahmedabad: With a fresh spell of rain continuing across parts of Gujarat, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over the next two days.

According to the IMD bulletin, very heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Panchmahal, Dahod and Mahisagar, for which an orange alert has been issued for today.

A yellow alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for Sabarkantha, Aravalli, Kheda, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Dang and Tapi.

The IMD has also forecast light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and surface winds of 30-40 kmph at isolated places across several districts of North Gujarat, South Gujarat and Saurashtra-Kutch.

On August 13, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in Dahod, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Dang and Tapi, with a yellow alert in place for these districts.

Thunderstorms with lightning, surface winds of 30-40 kmph and light to moderate rainfall are also likely at isolated places in several districts, including Panchmahal, Dahod, Mahisagar, Vadodara, Chhota Udepur, Narmada, Bharuch, Surat, Dang, Tapi, Navsari, Valsad, Amreli and Bhavnagar, as well as Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall across Gujarat from August 14 to 18.

Weather systems driving rainfall

The IMD said the low-pressure area over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas persisted over the region on August 12, with its associated cyclonic circulation extending up to 7.6 km above mean sea level.

Another low-pressure area has formed over the North Bay of Bengal off the West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts and is likely to become a well-marked low-pressure area within the next 12 hours. It is expected to further concentrate into a depression and move northwestwards across West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh during the following 24 hours.

The monsoon trough, a western disturbance and a shear zone over central and adjoining peninsular India are also continuing to influence weather conditions over the region. DeshGujarat
