180 km Creek Survey Completed as Surat Intensifies Flood Mitigation Efforts

Surat: The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has completed surveys covering 180 km of the city’s 188-km creek network as part of its flood mitigation efforts.

The progress was reviewed at a weekly meeting of the special committee formed to examine creek flooding. Officials said LiDAR, DGPS and drone surveys have been completed for the 180-km stretch, while technical assessments are underway to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) and hydrology model.

The committee discussed two key proposals. One involves water retention or diversion measures to address siltation, including a digital survey of around 330 acres at the Biodiversity Park in Bamroli.

The second proposes diverting Varachha creek directly into the Tapi river through the floodgate beneath the Chikuwadi Kalakunj river bridge instead of routing the flow towards Koyali creek.

Municipal Commissioner M Nagarajan directed officials to prepare detailed plans for both proposals.

Meanwhile, the irrigation department has started widening the canal downstream of Althan bridge, with weekly progress reports sought. Surveys in Budiya and Jiyav, two of five non-town planning areas, have also been completed, with officials directed to finish the remaining three at the earliest. DeshGujarat
