Vadodara Man Develops Rabies Symptoms After Stray Dog Bite; Hospitalised

Vadodara: A suspected case of rabies has come to light in the Bhayli area of Vadodara, where a young man, Hemant, reportedly developed severe symptoms after being bitten by a stray dog and failing to receive timely anti-rabies treatment.

According to the information available, Hemant was bitten by a dog some time ago but did not seek medical treatment or take the anti-rabies vaccine. He later developed severe symptoms, with his mental condition deteriorating to the point that he reportedly started biting himself and attempting to attack people around him.

As the situation became difficult to control, people nearby restrained the young man with a rope and shifted him to Gotri Hospital in a 108 ambulance. His condition was reportedly found to be serious, following which he was transferred from Gotri Hospital to the Infectious Diseases Hospital for further treatment.

Commenting on the case, infectious diseases specialist Dr Hiten Karelia said, “Once rabies develops, the chances of survival are very low. The rabies virus affects the brain and nervous system. That is why it is extremely important to seek medical attention and take the anti-rabies vaccine without delay after a dog bite.”

On identifying potentially rabid dogs, Dr Karelia said, “If a dog behaves unusually, appears restless or aggressive, refuses food or water, or has excessive drooling, people should maintain a safe distance. If bitten, they should immediately go to a hospital and seek medical treatment and vaccination.” DeshGujarat
