Gujarat’s New Challan System: Unpaid Fines After 75 Days to Suspend Vehicle Licence & Registration Services

Gandhinagar: Gujarat Police has started implementing the Next Generation Challan System across the state from August 12, 2026, introducing a time-bound process for paying traffic fines and challenging challans issued for alleged violations.

Under the new system, vehicle owners will get 45 days from the date of generation of an e-challan to either pay the fine or raise an objection through the transport portal. The system is aimed at making traffic enforcement more transparent, ensuring timely communication with motorists and providing a structured grievance redressal mechanism.

State Traffic Branch SP V. Sathiya said motorists who believe a challan has been wrongly issued can file an online complaint through the transport portal. They will first have to update their current mobile number to receive SMS updates regarding the challan and complaint. They can then upload documentary evidence supporting their objection and submit the grievance online.

Once a complaint is received, the police will examine the evidence and dispose of the grievance within 30 days. A DySP-level officer at the district level will supervise the process, while a PI-level officer will examine the evidence and take a decision on the complaint.

The entire process, from generation of the challan to disposal of a grievance, will be completed within a maximum of 75 days. If the challan is found to be valid, the vehicle owner will be required to pay the applicable fine.

However, if the fine remains unpaid even after 75 days from the generation of the challan, all vehicle-related licensing and registration services available through the transport portal will be suspended.

The new system also provides a legal recourse for motorists who remain dissatisfied after their complaint is disposed of by the police. They can approach the court by paying 50% of the challan amount as required for filing an appeal.

The revised mechanism is intended to ensure that traffic challans are not only enforced more efficiently but that motorists also have a clear and time-bound process to contest errors and submit supporting evidence. DeshGujarat
