BITS Pilani Plans Specialised Competency Centre in Gujarat

Ahmedabad: BITS Pilani is looking to set up a specialised competency centre in Gujarat, with the proposed facility expected to focus on the state’s strong chemicals sector. As per reports, the centre, involving an estimated investment of Rs 20 crore to Rs 30 crore, is likely to be announced soon.

BITS Pilani Group Vice-Chancellor Prof. V Ramgopal Rao said BITS is considering competency centres in different Gujarat cities based on the strengths and requirements of their respective industrial clusters. A chemical-focused centre is among the proposals being actively considered.

Rao was in Ahmedabad on Friday for the BITS Alumni Association (BITSAA) Annual Day 2026, marking his first visit to the city after taking charge as Group Vice-Chancellor.

BITS’ competency centres are specialised, industry-oriented facilities designed around the requirements of specific industrial clusters. Unlike conventional university campuses, these centres provide companies with access to specialised infrastructure and academic expertise for research, technology development, testing and other industry-specific activities.
