The incident took place at BJ Jewellers in Sanjan village of Umargam sub-division, around 25 km from Vapi. The area, located close to the Gujarat-Maharashtra border and the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman, is considered vulnerable to cross-border movement by criminals.
The accused, identified as Dinesh Sonkar and Vipin Pathak, allegedly broke into the jewellery shop after picking its lock. However, some locals became suspicious and brought down the shutter, trapping the two men inside.
As more people gathered outside, the accused reportedly locked themselves inside the shop and eventually contacted the police for assistance.
When police reached the spot, some members of the crowd were allegedly attempting to open the shutter with sticks. The police intervened, rescued the two men from the shop and arrested them.
Police also recovered jewellery that the accused had allegedly collected for theft, along with tools believed to have been used to break into the shop.
Deputy Superintendent of Police B. Dave said police would seek the custody of the accused and investigate their backgrounds to determine whether they have been involved in any previous criminal cases. DeshGujarat
