Holtec International Eyes Gujarat for SMR Manufacturing Facility, R&D Centre
August 22, 2026
New York: US-based nuclear technology company Holtec International has expressed interest in setting up a small modular reactor (SMR) manufacturing facility and a research and development (R&D) centre in Gujarat as the State seeks to build a domestic nuclear equipment ecosystem.
The proposal was discussed during Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel’s meeting with Holtec’s leadership in New York during his five-day US visit ahead of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit 2027.
Patel said nuclear power equipment, including SMRs, has been identified as a thrust area under Gujarat’s newly announced Industrial Policy 2026. The proposed facility could strengthen the State’s energy-sector manufacturing capabilities as India expands its nuclear power capacity and explores newer reactor technologies, the State government said.
The government, however, has not disclosed details on the proposed investment, location or timeline. Patel’s meeting with Holtec was part of a series of one-to-one meetings with global companies during his US visit. DeshGujarat
