Gujarat to Phase Out Plastic Folders, Files in Govt Offices

Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has decided to phase out the use of plastic folders and files across government offices in the state as part of its efforts to promote sustainable and environment-friendly working practices.

The General Administration Department (GAD) has issued a circular directing government offices to gradually discontinue the use of plastic-based stationery in line with the Centre’s Environment (Protection) Act, 1986 and Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016.

The decision will apply to all departments of the Secretariat, offices of Heads of Departments, public sector undertakings, corporations, societies, autonomous bodies, local government bodies, government universities and grant-in-aid institutions.

Under the new guidelines, plastic folders and files used for routine administrative work will be replaced with eco-friendly alternatives made from paper, hemp or cloth.

The government has clarified that existing stocks of plastic stationery can be used until they are exhausted. However, all fresh purchases after that will have to comply with the new environmental guidelines.

The initiative is aimed at reducing the use of plastic in government offices and promoting a more sustainable work culture. The state government said the move also reflects its commitment to environmental protection and the Swachh Bharat Mission.
