Ahmedabad: A team of the Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs Department intercepted a couple from Vadodara in their fifties and seized 1.928 kg of hydroponic marijuana from their baggage at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport in the city on Wednesday.
According to the Customs Department, the passengers, a man and a woman, were intercepted after arriving from Bangkok based on passenger profiling and X-ray scanning.
During a detailed inspection of their trolley bags, officers found specially created concealed compartments. Five vacuum-packed packets containing a green-coloured substance were recovered from each of the two bags. Preliminary testing confirmed the substance as marijuana or ganja, with the 10 packets weighing a total of 1,928 grams.
The couple was arrested and the contraband was seized under the provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, officials said.
The seizure is the second such case reported at SVPI Airport within three days. Earlier, Customs officials had apprehended a Myanmar national and recovered 6 kg of hydroponic marijuana concealed in a similar manner inside his baggage. DeshGujarat
