72nd National Film Awards to Be Held in Ekta Nagar in Gujarat; First Time Outside Delhi
September 07, 2026
Ekta Nagar: The National Film Awards have traditionally been associated with Delhi, with the capital hosting generations of leading personalities from the Indian film industry. This year, however, the prestigious ceremony is set to break with tradition as the 72nd edition moves to a new location.
The awards ceremony will be held at Ekta Nagar, home to the world’s tallest statue, the Statue of Unity, on September 22, marking the first time the National Film Awards will be presented outside Delhi.
President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to present the awards during her visit to Gujarat later this month, officials said on Monday, according to news agency PTI.
Instituted in 1954, the National Film Awards have been largely associated with Delhi over the decades, with Vigyan Bhawan serving as the familiar venue for several editions. The decision to host the 72nd ceremony in Gujarat therefore gives this year’s event added significance.
The Statue of Unity will provide a distinctive backdrop to the celebrations. Standing 597 feet tall, the monument honours Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018.
The winners of the 72nd National Film Awards were announced in July. Article 370 won Best Feature Film, while Yami Gautam was named Best Actress for her performance in the film.
Mammootty and Kartik Aaryan will share the Best Actor honour for their performances in Bramayugam and Chandu Champion, respectively. Randeep Hooda was named Best Debut Director for Swatantrya Veer Savarkar.
Meanwhile, Kalki 2898 AD has been honoured with the award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment. DeshGujarat
